I remember these cars in Africa. Every teen had a Ford Anglia - and then upgraded to a Cortina. But then went back to an Anglia - with the lotus engine. It wasn't thought of as exotic - but more reliable.

I worked at Wreningham building a turkey house at the end of the aerodrome in June 1967 where the Lotus factory was situated ,, Often , I mean at least 3 days a week we saw these Lotus being tested on the runway ,,, I had a Cortina 1200 in 1968 ... the GT was a std . 1500 motor with a single 28 - 36 DCD down draft Webber , of course the motor was modified and was capable of 112 MPH ,, PS the Mini Cooper S did the same speed and thats why the GT was developed ,,

One point "Lotus Cortina was the only one with badges on the flanks"... No the Cortina GT had GT badges in the same place - so your "Genuine Lotus" could be a GT - I know , I had one! :-)

The Manchester ( uk) police .used some of these to catch the car thieves in the 80's, they were the only car that could catch them. One day a mechanic, at the ford garage that serviced them, left the keys in the police car he had just serviced and parked it on the forecourt and one of the lowlifes stole it. All day we listened to the local radio reports as the car was chased all around Manchester and couldn't be caught. Eventually they found the car burnt out on waste ground. What a waste !

Yes, in it’s day it was one of the greats, with amazing road holding cornering abilities running on Goodyear G800 tyres, my friend had one, he would pick me up & we would drive 55 miles into our workplace, scaring me around the twisting bends of narrow country roads putting it through it’s paces, loved it!

I had a 2 door GT but we threw out the slow pre crossflow 4 banger and put a 3 litre Essex V6 out if a Capri in it. Used to have to pick and choose when you were gonna hammer it because it was 50/50 if you were gonna break a half shaft. I ended up getting about 6 out of junkyard and keeping them at home cod they broke so regular and got real quick at swapping them. That car flew ..... until I stuffed it into a tree in Northumberland Avenue, North Harrow in 1984 and bent the chassis. I vowed I'd get and build another but never did.

My first car at 17 was a Mk1 Lotus Ford Cortina - it had sat on an army base car park in Catterick Garrison, North Yorkshire. The regiment had moved to a new location and the solider owner simply left the car. The car was offered to my Dad by the Military Police for nothing and we took it in a heart beat. The car was missing the engine and eventually with Military Police help we found the original engine in a lock up. I paid 200 UK pounds for it and after getting it home we found it was blown and needed a rebuild. I was paid 27 UK Pounds a week at the time. After fixing the motor I went to get it insured, 3 months insurance cost more than I earned in a year as an apprentice!!! I only ever got to drive it up and down my Dads drive, all 100 feet of it! I ended up giving the car to my neighbour who did all our welding and reverted back to a Bond Bug 700ES that I could afford. These cars are now approaching $100k and I still have a very strong soft spot for them. So cool to see it on Jay's program!

My first car was a 1963 Cortina. It was equipped with Astro Flow" ventilation. It was turquoise. I bought it for $50.00. Rebuilt the motor and painted it. Drove it around that summer with the neighbourhood kids as my passengers. Sold it for $300.00. I was 14 years old at the time. My dad bought me the car to fix up to keep me off the streets... woops.

In Australia we didn't get the Lotus as they would have had to import 250 units to homologate so the local hot Ford Cortina was the GT 440, the sporty Corty 440, they won Bathurst in 1965 with a GT500, named for the race.

I served an apprenticeship as a motor technician in the UK in the late 1960s. There were several dream cars which I knew I would never be able to afford. The E type Jaguar, the MGB and the Lotus Cortina. We did have a saying about the Lotus though, LOTUS = Lots Of Trouble Usually Serious. Great restoration. Well done.

The Holden/Isuzu Gemini had front discs with a 13 inch wheel, and I am pretty sure the Nissan /Datsun 120Y also had front discs with 13 inch. I drove one of these in Darwin Australia, as well as the GT version just over 100 miles an hour, in the late 80s they were great fun!

In the mid 60's I used to be at the Roskild Ring Danmark and the lotus's were often beaten by SAAB92's and 94's but the Volvo 132's,122s's and B18 / B20's with better drivers could beat the Lotus Cortina's the odd Mini Cooper would push the lotus close behind at times.BMW and ALFA 's 2liter were hard to beat for the Lotus. BMW2002Tii and various Alfa's.the Fiat 1500Abarth were quick aswell ! Tough times for Lotus. Be Blessed.

Lots of fun in the mid 1960's,the Radial tyres became popular so a set of Pirelli Cientorato would be put on and minilite alloy wheels aswell. Then we had extra quartz Iodine lamps and a Halfos until they were banned for road use.PS.I expect a lot of GT's were made to look like a Lotus and sold as such in the states?

The Cortina GT was mainly red.I think that you might have seen these . The GT Cortina was my favourit.Leaf rear springs easily lower the body on these leaf springs.Anti tramp bars also an easy fit.The GT had 90BHP but could tune easily for another 10 BHP. The Dash was with round instruments .Of course a tuned exhaust was always supplied with Police Motorcyclists on their Triumph 650 Saints.Koni rear shocks of course.Great motors and were not so harsh a ride as the Cortina Lotus.

I owned a lotus cortina in NZ in 1969. Was enjoying the show but was disappointed when the trunk lid was opened. Where were the struts that helped hold the rear of the car .The original face lift car had a coil spring rear end with an a frame that caused diff cracks. They were usually modified with leaf springs but it meant that they were not original. I owned a gt model as well as two other lotus models. David.

Hey Jay, regarding disc brakes fitting inside 13" wheels. You and Jim surmised there were no other cars that had 13" wheels with disc brakes, however the Sunbeam Alpine of the era had such a set up. I owned a 1960 model from new, with those tiny 13" wire wheels.....same car as featured in "Butterfield 8," only mine was "Glen Green" rather than red like Liz's....both with the black hardtop....like the Model T, you could get any color, so long as it was black!
